Do You Need a Return Ticket for Portugal’s Temporary Digital Nomad Visa?

When preparing an application for Portugal’s Temporary Stay Digital Nomad Visa, many applicants focus primarily on their income, remote work documents and accommodation.

However, another document can also create difficulties when it is not prepared correctly: the flight reservation.
A common question is:

“When should I schedule my return flight?”

For applicants requesting permission to stay in Portugal for approximately one year, the return journey should generally reflect that same immigration plan. A return flight booked only a few weeks or months after arrival may contradict the duration of stay presented in the visa application.

This issue recently arose in a case handled by our office and provides a useful example of why travel dates must be reviewed as part of the complete visa strategy.

What Is the Temporary Stay Digital Nomad Visa?

Portugal offers a temporary stay visa for foreign nationals who carry out professional activities remotely for individuals or companies located outside Portugal.

Unlike the residence version of the Digital Nomad Visa, the temporary stay option is designed for applicants who intend to remain in Portugal for a limited period without immediately applying for a Portuguese residence permit.

Official Portuguese guidance describes temporary stay visas as allowing a stay in Portugal of up to one year. Guidance concerning temporary professional activities also identifies this category as being intended for activities lasting less than one year.
The temporary nature of the application affects how the applicant should prepare the travel itinerary.

Why Is a Return Ticket Relevant?

A temporary stay visa is based on the understanding that the applicant intends to remain in Portugal for a defined period and leave the country at the end of that period.

For this reason, Portuguese visa requirements may include a transport document that ensures the applicant’s return. Official guidance for temporary professional visas expressly lists a transport document securing the return journey among the supporting documents.

The return ticket should therefore not be treated as an isolated travel purchase. It forms part of the overall information assessed in the visa application.

A Real Case From Our Office

A client of our office applied for Portugal’s Temporary Stay Digital Nomad Visa.
He intended to remain in Portugal for approximately one year, which was consistent with the maximum period available under the temporary stay route.

During the preparation of the application, he had questions about the date of the return flight. The return journey could not be scheduled only a short time after his arrival because that would not accurately represent the immigration plan presented in her application.
Since he was requesting permission to remain in Portugal for approximately 12 months, his travel arrangements also needed to reflect a stay of approximately that duration.

In his case, the appropriate approach was to arrange the return journey for approximately one year after the intended date of arrival in Portugal, keeping the travel dates within the period requested and permitted under the visa.

For example, if the intended arrival in Portugal were 1 September 2026, the return journey should generally be planned for approximately August or September 2027, rather than for October or December 2026.

The precise date should remain consistent with:

  • the period requested in the application;
  • the intended date of entry;
  • the duration of the remote work activity;
  • the travel insurance coverage; and
  • the instructions issued by the competent consulate or visa application centre.

Why Would an Earlier Return Date Be a Problem?

Imagine that an applicant requests a temporary stay visa based on the intention to live and work remotely from Portugal for almost one year.

However, the same applicant presents a return flight scheduled only two months after arrival.

The authorities may reasonably question:

  • whether the applicant genuinely intends to remain for the period requested;
  • whether the applicant has correctly understood the visa category; or
  • whether the application contains conflicting information.

A return flight after two months does not necessarily mean that the visa will be refused.

The applicant may have a legitimate reason for travelling during the authorised period.

However, where no explanation is provided, the inconsistency may result in questions or a request for additional documentation.

Should the Return Flight Be Exactly One Year Later?

Not necessarily to the exact day.

The important point is that the return date should be reasonably consistent with the intended duration of the temporary stay.

If the applicant is requesting a stay of approximately 12 months, the return journey should normally be scheduled close to the end of that period and should not exceed the authorised stay.

Must the Applicant Purchase a Confirmed Ticket?

Applicants should carefully review the wording of the checklist applicable to their consular jurisdiction.

Depending on the authority processing the application, the requirement may refer to:

  • a return ticket;
  • a flight reservation;
  • a transport document;
  • a confirmed itinerary; or
  • proof of an onward or return journey.

These expressions are not always identical.

An applicant should not automatically purchase an expensive, non-refundable ticket if the competent authority accepts a reservation or flexible booking.

Visa processing may be delayed, additional documents may be requested, and the intended travel date may need to change. For this reason, where permitted, a refundable or changeable booking may reduce the financial risk.

The VFS Global checklist and instructions applicable to the country of submission should always be reviewed before the ticket is issued. VFS also notes that Portuguese consular posts may request documents beyond those included in the general checklist.

What Happens if the Ticket Has Already Been Purchased With the Wrong Date?

If the applicant has already purchased a return flight that does not correspond to the intended stay, the booking should be reviewed before the visa application is submitted.

The applicant should not simply ignore the discrepancy.

An inconsistent ticket may not automatically result in refusal, but it can create avoidable questions and weaken the clarity of the application.

Common Mistakes With Flight Reservations

Booking the return journey too early
The applicant requests an 11- or 12-month stay but presents a return flight after only a few weeks.

Booking beyond the requested period
The return journey is scheduled after the period for which the applicant is requesting permission to remain.

Buying a non-refundable ticket too soon
The applicant assumes that the visa will be issued before a particular date and loses money when processing takes longer than expected.

Confusing the temporary visa with the residence visa
The applicant presents travel plans that are appropriate for relocation while applying for a temporary stay, or presents a short return journey while declaring an intention to establish residence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a return ticket for Portugal’s Temporary Stay Digital Nomad Visa?
A return transport document or reservation may be required to demonstrate the applicant’s planned departure from Portugal. The exact format should be confirmed in the checklist issued by the competent consulate or visa application centre.

When should I book the return journey?
The date should reflect the intended period of temporary stay. For an application based on a stay of approximately one year, the return journey should generally be scheduled close to one year after arrival, without exceeding the period requested or authorised.

Can I book a return flight after only three months?
You may have a legitimate reason to travel after three months. However, if the application states that you intend to remain in Portugal for approximately one year, an unexplained return flight after three months may appear inconsistent with that plan.

Does the ticket need to be non-refundable?
Not necessarily. The applicable checklist may accept a reservation, itinerary or flexible ticket. Applicants should confirm the exact requirement before purchasing a non-refundable fare.

Is the temporary Digital Nomad Visa valid for exactly one year?
The temporary stay category allows a stay of up to one year. The period granted in an individual case depends on the application, the supporting documents and the decision of the competent authority.

Final Considerations

For Portugal’s Temporary Stay Digital Nomad Visa, the flight itinerary must support the temporary nature and intended duration of the application.

Where the applicant intends to remain in Portugal for approximately one year, presenting a return journey only a few weeks or months after arrival may not accurately reflect that plan.

The practical lesson from the case handled by our office is clear:

If the application is based on an intended stay of approximately 12 months, the return reservation should generally be planned for approximately 12 months after arrival, within the period requested and permitted under the visa.

The exact booking should nevertheless be reviewed alongside the accommodation, insurance, professional documents and instructions of the competent consular authority.

Preparing these documents as a coherent set can help prevent unnecessary questions, additional document requests and avoidable delays.
